Visit Matt Laurie Racing Website Matt Laurie’s love affair with horses started at a very young age. After completing his VCE, Matt set off for the United Kingdom to work with Australian equestrian triple gold medallist, Matt Ryan, where, as part of his responsibilities, under Ryan’s tutelage, he schooled many of his horses on the flat, cross country and show jumping and was responsible for pre-gallop/fitness work for several horses, including his 2000 Sydney Olympic gold medal horse, Kibbah Sandstone.
Following his years of competing in eventing, training and developing equestrian horses, Matt decided to use his skills and love of horses to carve a career in the thoroughbred racing industry. Matt has been involved in the education and training of horses internationally and within Australia. His expertise in training and re-educating difficult horses, using the philosophies based on the training principles of long time mentor, Dr Andrew McLean of the Australian Equine Behaviour Centre has given him the skills to break them in and to understand and address problems that others can’t. Matt has,and continues to pre-train and break-in horses for a number of big name stables, prepared horses for the Hong Kong Jockey Club International Sale and was part of a two-man breaking team for Freedman Brothers Racing. Benicio, Oratorio, Hollow Bullet, Bel Donoro, Brockmans Lass, Jiang, McLoaded, Danger Looms, Marconi, Sweet Cheeks and Our Baby Bonus are just some of the many horses to receive their grounding from Matt. Matt took out a trainers’ licence in 2004. His desire to maximize a horse’s ability, coupled with his understanding of the horse’s psychology makes Matt an all-round horseman with a widely respected reputation within the industry. His hard work and dedication to becoming the best in the business is providing great results already, with many metropolitan winners to his name and his first stakes success when The Travelling Man had an all the way win the Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield on 26 January 2012.
